A Sew Wylde Sunday

Recently I have been watching Stitched, a high-style-meets-high-stakes show, where four competitors face off in dramatic themed challenges where one designer is eliminated each round — it aired in 2018 but I’m still hooked.

I was inspired by these creators turning out fill garments and looks in mere hours. So I decided that every Sunday from now on will be dedicated as my sewing day where I will take some time out of my busy schedule and focus solely on creating something new--whether it takes me all day or just an hour or two--it doesn't matter because at the end of those hours spent stitching away, there will be something beautiful waiting for me!

The Challenge Begins

I am often inspired by an idea, a feeling, or a look that I want to convey, and then the collection unfolds from there. Luckily I have stacks and stacks of designs, so I have been laying out which design I am diving into ahead of time for when Sunday rolls around.

The Benefits of Dedication

Dedication is a powerful tool for gaining focus and clarity. It helps you to be fully present in whatever you're doing, so that you can enjoy the creative process without being distracted by other things. When we're dedicated to something, we tend not to think about anything else except what we're dedicating ourselves to in the moment. This can be extremely beneficial in all areas of life, from writing an essay to creating art work, as it allows us enough time and space in our minds so that we can come up with our best ideas. When we’re distracted by other things going on around us (for example: social media), our ideas suffer.

This also applies when sewing clothes too! When sewing garments in general, there are usually many different steps involved: choosing or creating patterns, cutting out patterns from paper sheets, marking lines onto the fabric pieces, pinning sections together before stitching them, and the final act of putting it all together. Each step requires complete focus, because it is all too easy for something to go wrong. (Another tip is using that Focus feature on your phone to eliminate distractions!)

The Rewards of Dedication

The rewards of dedication show themselves — the finished product is of course the most satisfying. The sense of accomplishment from completing something all the way through (even when it got hard or boring). And finally, there's nothing like the satisfaction of doing something well — and knowing that it was all because of you!
